Sri Akal Takht Sahib
The highest temporal seat of authority for Sikhs, founded in 1606 by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji directly facing Sri Harmandir Sahib as a symbol of sovereign political power, justice, and spiritual fortitude.
Sri Akal Takht Sahib (Throne of the Timeless One) was founded in 1606 by Sixth Master Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, assisted by venerable stalwarts Baba Buddha Ji and Bhai Gurdas Ji. Standing on a raised foundation facing Harmandir Sahib, it established that the Sikh spirit answers to no mortal earthly emperor, but only to the Akal Purakh (Timeless Creator). Here, Guru Hargobind Ji donned the two historic swords of Miri (temporal, civic authority) and Piri (spiritual, ethical wisdom). From this high podium, Guru Ji issued Hukamnamas calling for brave warriors, horses, and weapons. Today, all Panthic edicts and collective resolutions for the worldwide Sikh community are pronounced directly from Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
